How to find your Matter pairing code

Every Matter device ships with a pairing code you scan or type to add it to a home. It comes in two interchangeable forms: a QR code and a numeric manual code. Knowing where to look saves you a lot of squinting.

The two forms of the code

The Matter QR code. A square QR whose data starts with MT:. Scanning it is the fastest path; it carries the full onboarding payload.
The manual pairing code. A string of digits, usually printed right under the QR, for when a camera can’t reach or read it. It’s either 11 or 21 digits and is often shown grouped, like 3497-011-2332.

Either one adds the same device, so capturing just one is enough.

Where the code is printed

On the device itself. The most common spot, a small label on the back, base, or underside. On battery-powered gear, check behind the battery door.
On the box or packaging. Frequently a duplicate label on the carton or a pull-out card.
In the quick-start guide. The paper leaflet often reproduces the QR and manual code together.
In the manufacturer’s app. Some brands surface the pairing code on the device’s detail/“about” screen even after it’s set up.

Look for the Matter logo

Genuine Matter codes sit next to the Matter wordmark (three arrows forming an “M”). If you see a QR with no MT: data and no Matter mark, it may be a Wi-Fi-setup or brand-account code, not the commissioning code you need.

Found it? Save it before it’s gone
